Modern times

There are companies, or rather, to be more precise, there are managers, executives, business owners, who hear about “Digital Transformation” at some seminar and go straight to their head of IT (CIO, CTO, Finance Manager (yes, that still happens)) and demand that a Digital Transformation strategy be put in place.

– And what is that?
– No idea, but we want it now!

And without delay they turn to the big-name consultancies, or the large three-letter companies, which show up with their armadas of specialists, experts in best practices, to offer the blessings of digital transformation (read: product sales and billable consulting hours).

And one of the favorite topics lately seems to be DevOps.

You have to create a DevOps unit! You must replace your systems engineers with DevOps!

And they haven’t even found out that DevOps is a philosophy, not a job title or a task to be carried out.

It’s about automating, about optimizing processes! “You must use this tool to streamline your development process and aim for digital transformation.”

And to “facilitate the decision”, these consultants propose doing a proof of concept.

And this happens:

Let’s recall: what does the first principle of the Agile Manifesto tell us?

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools.

So, friends, it’s not about buying the latest technologies, or automating for automation’s sake. It’s about understanding how teams relate to each other in order to deliver a product, or provide a service.

Don’t let what happens to the Tramp in Modern Times happen to you. You can do better.

The solution doesn’t always lie with those prestigious consultancies. Look for a Meetup, or a developer community in your city. You’ll find people willing to help you, and to learn.

Experiment!

Try new things with your team, read, study on your own, don’t wait for everything to come down from above.

Real change happens when you take charge of your own life, and that’s the transformation worth having.
