A citizens' response to violence

es Leer este post en español →

In this video Emiliano Salinas reflects on the 4 levels of civil response to violence. The step a citizenry takes when, instead of seeing itself as a victim of its situation, it becomes responsible and engaged, and takes the future of its country into its own hands.

The first level is denial and apathy, the state of not acknowledging that there are problems. The citizenry has to be moved to the second level, which is recognition, and out of it fear arises in many people. Fear is better, because it moves citizens to do something. But fear can shut people up in their homes. So it is necessary to shake people up and take them to the third level, action. Now, for many people acting requires courage, rage. “I can’t take this situation anymore, let’s do something!”, and then violence will emerge. Faced with violence, what has to be done is to move to the fourth level, that of non-violent, coordinated, peaceful action, which does not mean passivity; it requires determination.

There are statements in the video that are plainly chauvinistic, and by the end it feels like we are listening to a pep rally speech, but I think identifying the 4 levels of action is a fairly reasonable idea, and it is the part of the video worth keeping.
