Don't you get bored of blogging?
Not that anyone has asked me the question, but I bring it up because of this post by Fred Wilson: Do You Ever Get Bored Of Blogging?:
“The truth is I never get bored of writing. It is something that came relatively late in life for me.… It’s a hobby, something I do to entertain and educate myself and I enjoy it very much. I love putting the puzzle that are my thoughts together every day.”
But it turns out there is a side effect:
“But an unintended consequence of this writing hobby is that I’ve developed an audience and a public persona. I didn’t set out to do that. But it happened. And now I’ve got a responsibility to serve the audience and manage the public persona. At least I feel that responsibility.”
I believe, and Fred Wilson makes it explicit, that this is where the danger lies, and the reason so many people give up on writing blogs. You can end up feeling trapped, obligated, and that produces stress and a reaction of boredom. The consequence is an abandoned blog. Which then forces you, every so often, to show some sign that you are still alive, especially if your blog is very popular and you have not written in a while.
I hope I never have to feel obligated to write for others, for you, my 300 subscribers. I like sharing what I write and think with you, sharing this box of chocolates that is my blog, now in its sixth year.
Well, all of this is to tell you that I am going on vacation, so I will not publish anything for 2 weeks, nor will I answer emails or comments. It is possible, though rather unlikely, that I will leave a couple of old articles scheduled for republication.
So this blog is officially declared on summer vacation. Thank you very much for your understanding ;)
