The limits of free speech

“In the end, freedom of expression is one of the foundations of the democratic system. With limited freedom of expression we get less public debate of ideas and less oversight of power. We can always come up with reasons to limit it. To protect the people from heresy, to protect our children, to protect the nation, the homeland or the race. Not long ago Jesus was even given a legal address at a law office on Paseo Ahumada in Santiago in order to block the screening of a film. Freedom of expression means allowing the publication of precisely those things we don’t like. Faced with the problems that come with freedom of expression, the answer should be more freedom of expression, not limiting it.”
