What are we Chileans like?

Hector Veliz Meza, in What do we Chileans think we are like?

“What do we Chileans think we are like? Are we generous, or do we think we are generous? Is there concrete proof showing that we are generous, given that donations to the Teletón, the annual charity telethon, represent only a fragmented and isolated reality? Are we cultured, educated and well prepared, or do we think we are? Might we not be getting confused, so that when we are asked what we are like we answer with what we think we are or how we would like to be?”

…

Are we as generous as we think we are? In the first place, if we were as open-handed as we claim, the Teletón wouldn’t exist, nor would “Un techo para Chile”, much less the street collections that bring in piddling sums, and supermarkets and pharmacies wouldn’t be doing public charity on the back of the spare pesos from their customers' change. None of this would be necessary. Don Francisco created the Teletón precisely because we are not generous and because to get free with our money we need the stimulus of the show."

Completely agree. A bit over the top with the flowery language, but I agree with the essence: one more example of false consensus.
