Me and my big mouth...
At my job there are disaster recovery plans and contingency sites, and they get tested at least a couple of times a year, all duly audited because there are government requirements and, stronger still, requirements from the foreign institutions that own the company. It’s not work anyone likes doing, but when an incident like an earthquake hits, the truth is it helps a lot, and it lets our IT people stay pretty calm in that moment. In the last earthquake everything went fine.
But in our personal lives we’re not so strict. If our PC dies we almost always end up mourning the lost data. Never mind our personal blog…
This Friday I suffered my own personal disaster: the hard drive of the server that hosts this blog failed beyond recovery. Murphy had it in for me.
I’ve been put to the test by the IT gods, and here I am recovering from my own disaster. The backups were out of date, of course. On top of that, this wasn’t the only site on that server. My son hosts several of his projects and his clients’ there, and so do my wife, my brother and a friend. I’m ashamed to admit they have better backups than I do, me, the one who preaches and doesn’t practice.
Me and my big mouth (or my big blog, as Jens put it).
I hope to have all the articles recovered during the day. I’m loading them month by month into another space, so they may take a while to show up. For now comments are disabled, because Movable Type hasn’t thought through article backups very well, or I’m too clumsy to figure out how to do them. If you want to give me advice, you can use twitter (@lnds) or write me an email (to the user ediaz at this domain).
