This is a crime

SANTIAGO.- Since January 20 the Stasi search engine (stasi.felipebarriga.cl) has been available to all internet users, making it possible to find the phone number, address, national ID number and other data of millions of Chileans.
Its creator, Felipe Barriga (23), a Computer Engineering student at Universidad Federico Santa María, explained that he got the database from the site fayerwayer.com in May of last year…

As for possible legal problems, the engineering student said he is not afraid, because the data available on the web page is public.
“Data such as names, RUT (national ID number) and voter registration are sold, and there is also a lot of information that can be obtained that is more interesting, for example at banks, where just by giving the RUT you can ask for the payment slips for loans and cards,” said Felipe Barriga.

At the moment, Felipe Barriga is in Australia, from where he runs the page, and he plans to return to the country in March to go back to university.

What Felipe Barriga did is a crime. You cannot publish the personal data of Chileans.

Although the electoral service’s databases can be bought, they cannot be published. There is indeed a problem there, but under Law 19.628 that information cannot be disclosed.

Besides, what he did is unethical. I wonder whether the authorities at UTFSM will take the appropriate measures.
