Fingerprints are personal data

The fact that fingerprints, or really fingerprint impressions, are not secret does not change the fact that they are personal data.

This clarification is necessary because Michael Chertoff, the US Secretary of Homeland Security, has said that fingerprints are not personal data, and as Schneier says, it is because he confuses secret data with personal data.
