No OLPC in Brazil

According to various sources, the Brazilian government has postponed the tender to acquire 150,000 XO laptops developed by the OLPC foundation.

“In an unexpected decision, the Brazilian government canceled the tender for the purchase of 150,000 laptops aimed at low-income children as part of the OLPC (One Laptop per Child) program, promoted by the American scientist Nicholas Negroponte in coordination with multinationals in the computing business.

As is well known, the program, which seeks to bring poor children into the “digital age” through the purchase of machines at an average price of 100 dollars, is being rolled out in several Latin American countries, Peru included.

The Brazilian government canceled the tender for the “laptops” after concluding that the lowest prices offered by the bidders came to US$360 per machine, not the expected US$100.
Despite the decision, the Brazilian government did not rule out calling a new tender in the coming months. The new call would change the number of laptops to be acquired, and the technical requirements, to encourage bidders to lower their prices.
