We have a prototype
I had already told you that on November 16 the ULPN project would be launched at WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society) in Tunis. (Where internet governance was also discussed). In the Chilean delegation of the magnificent seven there was no official from the Ministry of Education, though there was one from Subtel (how interesting that we can follow the movements of our government officials). The rest are staff from the permanent mission in Geneva.
About the launch
Today I was thinking that you could make a lot of jokes playing on the surname Negroponte and Kofi Annan, but this is serious, so let’s leave it to the reader’s imagination.
Shezzo and Carlos have reminded me of the subject, but I haven’t posted because the truth is I still haven’t been able to watch the video, and besides I’ve been on the move, and the little they showed on TV yesterday was somewhat disappointing. It looked like a bunch of mockups, nothing working, although there’s a photo out there of someone with a standard keyboard plugged into the machine. So I suspect that what Negroponte showed was the mockup, and that the prototype must be wired up and partially working, with outside help. That wouldn’t be strange: when the Newton was launched there was a cable running from the Newton to a Mac, and the Newton was only acting as an input/output device.
So when I finally get access to the information, on cheaper and more decent bandwidth, I’ll write up my impressions.
What matters is that several people are blogging about it, and they realize what a fool our government has made of itself. But hey, another government is on its way, and let’s hope things change for the better (I’m feeling optimistic today).
