Cuba, the best at computing
The IOI was held in Poland this year (Chile, of course, did not take part).
If anyone sees President Lagos, tell him the minister of education deserves another slap on the wrist :)
In any case, I think putting together a good team for the 2006 IOI (which will be in Merida (Merida the white), Yucatán) is worth more than learning Mandarin, than the MPPCPDV campaign (with all due respect, and being a supporter of it myself), or than expressing hatred of internet explorer...
I don’t know why this news doesn’t surprise me...
Cuba, best Ibero-American country at the International Olympiad in Informatics
Havana, 1 (AIN) The Cubans Daniel Rodríguez Sánchez, with a silver medal, and David Cuellar Morales, with a bronze, made Cuba the best country in Ibero-America at the International Olympiad in Informatics held in Poland.
The event drew 276 competitors from 76 nations, and the young men from the Island finished with satisfactory results, considering the high level of their rivals, the newspaper Juventud Rebelde notes today.
Over two days of competition Daniel and David each solved six problems of an algorithmic nature, for which they wrote software using a programming language.
The former scored 418 points out of a possible 600, good for silver, and the latter won the bronze with a total of 335.
The coach and teacher Francisco Hernández pointed out that China and Slovakia came out with four gold medals each, while in Ibero-America Brazil, with two bronzes, came next after Cuba.
Daniel Rodríguez and David Cuellar Morales finished twelfth grade at the Instituto Preuniversitario Vocacional de Ciencias Exactas Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara, in Villa Clara, and they are satisfied with the results, a real achievement considering the high level of their rivals.
The Cuban preselection was put together from the results of the National Computing Contest for upper secondary level, and the students receive training while their development of skills in solving typical olympiad exercises is evaluated.
The strong performance of the two from Villa Clara allowed the Island, for the third year in a row, to remain among the standout countries in competitions of this kind, since in each edition they won one silver and one bronze medal.
Cuba has taken part in every olympiad in the discipline except the one held in 2003 in the United States, because that country denied visas to the Island’s delegation.
