Democratization of the internet?
A long time ago, before the earth had cooled, we could set up our own servers, plug them into the network, and there we were, publishing our content on the internet. It could be a gopher, an ftp, a BBS, or a newsgroup.
Berners-Lee gave us the web as a gift, and the innovators ruined everything. The bubble burst and we all got soaked :)
A quote from Flores’s blog:
Moore is also the author of the book The Death of Competition, which deals with business strategies, and he points out that blogs and RSS make “the democratization of services on the internet” a reality
What!?
Back when there were no ISPs and the internet wasn’t a business, and we
had
total control of our ports, that’s when the internet really was
democratic. Read Smart Mobs, which explains better how we went from a
scheme of total freedom to the tyranny of the ISPs.
So in reality blogs, and better yet wikis, are winning back ground that was lost thanks to the innovators of the internet.
I’m not against entrepreneurship, or against new businesses based on blogs. I don’t quite see where the money is, Show me the money, but when there is money involved, it’s hard to have more democracy. Heisenberg’s principle:
Delta(Democracy) x Delta(Capitalism) = Constant.
