A thought on MPPC

Fernando Flores has spoken out about the MPPC campaign.

On that, I have to say the ugly part isn’t which operating system the PC in question comes with, or even the hardware. That’s irrelevant. The ugly part is that the sponsorship goes to the same people as always and not to the small business owners, who sell better quality PCs at lower prices.

(There used to be a comment here about the sponsorship. Thanks to Paolo Colonello for clarifying that the government only gave its endorsement, not sponsorship, so I apologize for the comment)

Thanks, Paolo, for the clarification.
Let’s call in the little ducks (the state bank’s mascots) to the rescue, for example

Why not give loans at Banco del Estado so people can buy their first PC, at rates that would be far lower than the ones the big department stores will charge? With the freedom to buy from anyone, in particular from the thousands of business owners who sell hardware up and down our country, who could benefit much more from a campaign like this one.

But it seems that what matters is for the big stores to keep capturing more cardholders. Now that really does our country good.

It seems that what matters is improving the digital literacy figures. Making it look like the government is doing something, never mind if it’s done badly.

By the way, for a while now there have been something like 7 million users with internet access, and computers with extraordinary capacity, in their pockets and purses, at costs far below US$ 100. Those computers are called cell phones ;) and for a while now we’ve been able to do fun things with them besides making calls...
