The expansion of the digital divide 2
The law of the expansion of the digital divide is as follows:
Vt = H x Dt
Where Vt is the speed at which the divide expands, H is a constant (to be determined) and Dt is the size of the divide.
Don’t take it too seriously. I’m just abusing Hubble’s law, applying it as a way to highlight the fact that the divide keeps getting bigger over time.
Being absolutely and knowingly non-rigorous, I’m going to amuse myself speculating with this law.
If the size of the divide today is 100
\[u\], and H is 1.11
\[1/month\](I’ll explain this number in a moment), the speed of expansion of the divide is 1.1 * 100, that is, 110
\[u/month\].
In 18 months, the digital divide will have grown by 110*18, that is, an additional 1980
\[u\].
I picked the value 1.11 on the grounds that if Moore’s Law is true, then every 18 months technological capacity doubles. So I said: if my capacity today is 1, that capacity reaches 2 in 18 months, which means it increases by 2/18 every month. (I’m abusing it, I insist).
A young person who buys a computer on 36-month credit, and has X
\[u\]of digital divide, will have accumulated 3960 + X
\[u\]of divide by the time he stops paying.
The worst part is that by then the more advanced world will be moving at 4356
\[u/month\]relative to him.
It gives me chills to think that someone smart, and with the ability, might pick up this speculative reasoning and discover there is something of value behind it...
Please criticize this reasoning, because it scares me...
